These caves are just 10 km away from Fort Portal town in Kabarole near Nyakasura School. The direct translation of Amabere ga Nyinamwiru is “breasts of the mother of a slave”. According to legends, the caves acquired the name after King Bukuku of Bunyoro. This fearless king chopped off the breasts of his daughter Nyinamwiru and threw them inside these caves.

This so happened following a prophecy that the daughter would one day get married and have a son, Ndahura, who would kill the king and take over his throne. The princess was a very beautiful young lady who had a strong personality. She refused to marry the man her father the King had chosen for her as was the custom in the day preferring to choose her own spouse.

The prophesy made him cut off the breasts of his daughter as an attempt to deform her so that men wouldn’t admire her. However, the king didn’t know that his daughter was already pregnant with a boy child. After giving birth, the king made another attempt to prevent this prophecy by ordering the killing of the child.

However, the people who were given the assignment to execute these orders didn’t do the job as told. They just dumped the child in the caves where her mother’s breasts were earlier dumped.

Besides the caves story, there’s a beautiful waterfalls “Mabere waterfalls” with very cold water that flows down the caves. Visitors usually take off their boots and step below these waterfalls for a bath in this cold and fresh waterfalls.
